W-Tec FLY at Oldebroek

After a long winter in preparation for the 2010 racing season, the Easter break saw the Planet Quad W-Tec team return to European Championship racing, the Stichting Circuit Oldebroek club hosting the first round of the 2010 GOLDSPEED EMX Quad European Championship at Circuit De Bargen, near Oldebroek, Holland.

Situated in the Gelderland region, the 1.75 Km deep sand circuit provided a tough test for both riders and machines over the two days of action, and despite heavy rain between Saturday’s practice session and Monday race day, the circuit and weather conditions on race day were perfect with the large crowd of spectators treated to some excellent racing, as the best Quad riders in Europe battled for the win over three 25 minute plus two-lap heats.

As Saturday practice got underway with only 30 riders qualifying for Mondays race, the largest entry yet with 41 riders from 10 Nations, the pace from the beginning was extremely fast despite the tough circuit conditions, but it was the Planet Quad W-Tec of Jan Vlaeymans who took the fastest lap, with Team-mates Mike Van Grinsven and Nikky Vaes also qualifying well in their groups, Van Grinsven 7th and Vaes 10th

For Vlaeymans the opening race did not go as planned with a small bike problem preventing him from riding at full pace and finishing 7th, but taking the holeshot in heat 2 Vlaeymans dominated the race for a gate to flag victory before completing a successful day with a fantastic 2nd place finish in the final race, “FLYMANS” finishing 2nd overall on the day and just 9 points behind the leader in the series.  “It has been a really good start to the Championship and I am really happy with my results” said Vlaeymans after the race, “I had a small problem in the first heat which slowed me a little, but my mechanic fixed it before race two and I was able to race at full speed.  The circuit had some deep ruts during the day, but the Planet Quad W-Tec is a fantastic bike and handled all the bumps easily.”

At just 16 years of age, Mike van Grinsven was the youngest rider at the meeting, but in spite of his young years Van Grinsven showed that he will be a real star in the future as he outscored many of the more experienced riders.  Starting from the front row after an excellent qualifying time, Van Grinsven made the most of his start position and speed and was able to work his way through the field in all three heats, taking a 6 – 9 – 8 score to finish 9th overall.  Speaking after the race Van Grinsven commented “ I am very pleased with my results, I never expected that I would finish in the top 10 between the big shots.  I did not get a good start in the second heat and got held up a lot in the beginning, but I am really happy with my starts in the other two races and I’m happy that my pace is close to the top eight.”

Making a welcome return to the Planet Quad W-Tec team, Nikky Vaes showed once again that he is a true fighter and capable of great results on the W-Tec.  Starting from the second row Vaes gated well in each heat just outside the top ten, but his progress in the opening two races was slowed by riders getting stuck in the deeply rutted corners and blocking his path, Vaes determined to score points and fighting back to finish 13th and 18th, before showing what he is truly capable off with an excellent 12th in the final heat.  “ Today has been a little difficult” said Vaes, “ I could not get a good lap in qualifying with riders slowing my fast lap, so my starts were from the second row all the time.  I was able to get good starts in spite of this, but the opening heats I found my path blocked and dropped some places but was able to score some points.  In the last race I had a better time and the finish allowed me to take 13th overall on the day.  I would like to have done better, but it is good to score points in each race and there are six more rounds to improve my position.”

It was an excellent result for the W-Tec company at their home round just 90 Km from their base in Neede, Davy Brems taking a 4 – 2 – 6 result to finish 3rd overall on the day and giving W-Tec two riders on the podium.  “ It has been a fantastic result” said Brems after the meeting, “I came to the race to get more time on the bike and improve my fitness in preparation for the French Quad Championship which is starting soon, so to finish this well is amazing.  The W-Tec was perfect in the bumpy conditions thanks to the guys at Extreme Tech suspension getting the set up perfect, and I just felt really comfortable and smooth all day and was able to keep a good pace through the race. It has been a great day and I would like to congratulate W-Tec on getting the results they deserve, with two riders in the top three and three in the top ten.”

The Planet Quad W-Tec Team will now take a short break and prepare for Round 2 of the GOLDSPEED EMX Quad European Championship at Langrish Circuit, Hampshire, England on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of April.
